Northeast Associated Press Sports Editors
The Marist College Center for Sports Communication has partnered with the Associated Press Sports Editors Northeast Region to regularly host the Northeast APSE regional meeting on the Marist campus, allowing for strong networking opportunities between working professionals and burgeoning sports writers and editors. In a partnership that began in 2011, this allows collaboration between students, academic faculty, sports editors, and sports writers, and it creates a positive model for those in the field and the ivory tower, bridging the gap between theory and practice.
Over the course of this relationship, several prominent sports writers have presented on various panels -- including Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe, Selena Roberts of Sports Illustrated, and TJ Quinn of ESPN -- among many others. This partnership also created the "networking" student/professional lunch program, where Marist students are paired with sports writers and editors for lunch and informal conversation -- as opposed to a traditional, formal lunch presentation. Marist students have also been a part of the event's panels, once leading a panel of the journalism habits of millennials.
